Description of project activities

The project focuses on improving soil fertility, adapting to climate change and promoting sustainable agriculture in Slovenia. Key activities include the production of bio-carbon from organic waste, the preparation of bio-carbon based compost with bio-stimulants and the testing of its efficiency on farms. In practical workshops, members of farms will be trained to produce and use bio-carbon. Pilot experiments will assess the impact of bio-based fertilisers on soil, crops and carbon footprint. The project promotes the circular economy and disseminates results to support sustainable agricultural practices.

Project activities planned

Production of bio-carbons from organic substances which otherwise constitute waste (e.g. manure, wood and plant residues, marine shellfish waste). Preparation of fertilisers by activating bio-carbon by composting and adding bio-stimulants. Practical farm trials – experimental use of prepared fertilisers in vegetable production. Development of a digital application for monitoring experimental parameters and calculation of required fertilisers. Production of a manual for the preparation of biogas and fertiliser use. Dissemination of knowledge and results through various events and activities between different target audiences.

Objectives and results of the operation

The project aims to address soil degradation, reduced fertility, climate change and the need for sustainable food production in Slovenia. The project introduces the use of bio-carbons, bio-stimulants and compost as a solution to improve soil structure and fertility, increase water retention and reduce erosion. With innovative approaches such as bio-composting and the use of farm resources, the project strengthens the resilience of production to climate change, reduces the use of synthetic fertilisers and promotes the circular economy, ensuring sustainable farm productivity.

The objectives of the project are:

Development of innovative bio-based fertilisers derived from local waste biomass. Use of bio-carbon to improve soil fertility and increase plant resistance to diseases and climate change. Practical tests on partner farms to check the effectiveness of bio- and bio-stimulants in the production of vegetables. Dissemination of results and knowledge through workshops, trainings and manuals.

The expected results are:

Farms qualified for self-preparation of bio- and fertiliser. Developed innovative and ecologically acceptable fertilisers. Tested fertiliser efficiency. Increased soil fertility and plant resistance to disease. Reduced amount of organic waste on farms, which gains value through composting. Reducing the use of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. Introduction of sustainable practices on farms, which will contribute to nature and environmental protection. Increase the self-sufficiency of vegetables and improve the quality of produce.
